Book Club

So I came up with a wonderful idea for a book club today. You know how people have wine clubs where they all meet up and drink a wine with a complimentary entrée? Picture this: a book club where you pair an album with a particular book. Members listen to an album and read the book together, allowing the aesthetics to mingle and clash, then meet up afterwards to discuss their reception of the two works.

Anybody want in on this one? If so, I would like to nominate Fever Ray's self-titled release paired with Milorad Pavic's Dictionary of the Khazars. C'mon, you know you want to.

Honestly, not really... but that's based on my own relationship with music. I'm a very passive consumer of music, usually taking from a few sources - you, steve, martin, the internet, Folk Fest - and listening in a very uncritical way. I tend to stick fairly close to a few albums, and pick the track based more on tone and beat than specific content. When I'm reading, I'll hear maybe the first few minutes of a album or playlist, maybe 30s in the middle somewhere, and then eventually notice that the music has stopped. I tend to be fairly focused when I read, and I use music more as a tool to help block outside sounds than as music itself. Then again, when it comes to food / wine pairings, I tend to pick something that fits fairly generally, enjoy it for what it is, and usually forget all about it while I have the meal in front of me, focusing instead on the interplay of flavours on the plate.
